Affetside sits high on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, north-west of Tottington, west of Greenmount and Hawkshaw and south of Edgworth. At around 900 feet above sea level, it has some of the widest views in the Bury area. The village runs along Watling Street, the Roman road built around AD 72 between Manchester and Ribchester. Its name is thought to come from the Old English for "the boundary on the hill".

Affetside grew in the 1700s as a stop for travellers on the packhorse route, with grazing, blacksmiths and inns. The Grade II listed Affetside Cross stands beside the village green. Local tradition says it marks the halfway point between London and Edinburgh. Homes here are mostly traditional stone cottages and terraces along Watling Street, along with farmhouses and characterful barn conversions. Some of these have been among the most valuable homes sold in the area in recent years.

It is a small, close-knit community of only around 150 residents. The Affetside Society looks after the look of the village, and the Millennium Green beside the cross hosts the spring boules competition, summer barbecues and the Christmas carol service. The village chapel and the Pack Horse, said to date back to the 15th century, are still at its heart.

For families, St Mary's Church of England Primary School in Hawkshaw and Tottington High School are both close by. Tottington village centre is a short drive away for everyday shopping. Bury, Bolton and Ramsbottom are all within easy reach, and Metrolink trams run from Bury Interchange into Manchester city centre.

Life in Affetside is all about the outdoors. Footpaths and tracks lead straight from the village onto open farmland and towards the moors, and on a clear day you can see for miles. After a walk, the Pack Horse has a bar, a conservatory and a terrace looking out over the countryside, and it serves food every day.
