Living in Little Lever

Little Lever is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, about two miles south-east of Bolton town centre and two miles west of Radcliffe. The River Croal and the River Irwell meet at Nob End, on the edge of the village, and the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal runs alongside it. It has a Bolton (BL3) postcode.

The canal once carried coal from the local pits, and the alkali waste tip at Nob End is a reminder of the chemical works that stood nearby. Today it is mainly residential, with Victorian terraces near the centre and a large number of semi-detached and detached homes built through the 20th century.

The village centre has shops, cafes, pubs and takeaways, and Bolton, Radcliffe and Bury are all close by.

Schools and getting around

Little Lever School on Church Street is the village's secondary school. Primary schools include Bowness, Masefield, Mytham, St Matthew's CE, St Stephen's and All Martyrs' CE and St Teresa's RC. Buses 521, 524 and 544 serve the village, linking it with Bolton and the surrounding area, and Moses Gate and Farnworth stations, on the line between Bolton and Manchester, are a short drive away.

Things to do

Moses Gate Country Park lies on the edge of the village, with lodges for fishing and water sports, riverside paths and a playground. At Nob End, where the three arms of the canal meet, the old alkali waste tip is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest known for its orchids, and the Meccano Bridge stands at the top of Prestolee Locks. The towpath here is one of the best-preserved stretches of the canal.
