Living in Heywood

Heywood is a town in the Borough of Rochdale, between Bury to the west and Rochdale to the east. It has an OL10 postcode, and junction 19 of the M62 is on its southern edge, so Manchester, Leeds and the rest of the north-west are within easy reach by road. Bury town centre is only a few miles away.

Heywood grew as a cotton town from the late 18th century, with 27 cotton mills by 1833, and many of its streets of red-brick terraced houses date from that time. Queen's Park opened in 1879 on the estate of the cotton manufacturer Charles Martin Newhouse and is listed Grade II. Over the 20th century the town spread out with estates of semi-detached and detached homes, and more recent developments have added new family housing. The town centre has independent shops, supermarkets, cafes and pubs.

Schools and getting around

Heywood has plenty of primary schools, including All Souls CE Primary School, Harwood Park Primary School, Heap Bridge Village Primary School, Hopwood Community Primary School and St Luke's CE Primary School. For secondary education there is Newhouse Academy, which was known as Siddal Moor, and Holy Family RC and CE College. The 471 bus runs between Rochdale, Heywood, Bury and Bolton, and the M62 and M66 are close by.

Things to do

Queen's Park has a boating lake, gardens and walks along the River Roch. Heywood is also the eastern end of the East Lancashire Railway, whose heritage trains run from Heywood station to Bury, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall. Bury and Rochdale are both close by for shopping and days out.
