Living in Bamford

Bamford is a residential area in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, about three miles west of Rochdale town centre, on the road towards Bury. Norden is to the north, Heywood to the south and the hamlet of Birtle and the Cheesden and Ashworth valleys to the west. It has a Rochdale (OL11) postcode, and Bury is only a short drive away.

The Fenton family were the leading local landowners and mill owners in the 19th century, and Joseph Fenton set up the Hooley Bridge cotton mills in 1826. Bamford Chapel was founded in 1801 on land given by Joseph and Ann Fenton, and Joseph Fenton bought Bamford Hall in 1816.

Today Bamford is mainly residential, with large Victorian and Edwardian houses, inter-war semis and later detached family homes on quiet roads. There is a small shopping precinct, and a choice of pubs and restaurants nearby.

Schools and getting around

Bamford Academy on Belgium Street is the local primary school, and other primary and secondary schools in Rochdale, Heywood and Bury are within easy reach. The 468 bus runs between Bury and Rochdale through Bamford, and Rochdale station has trains to Manchester and Leeds. The A680 gives quick access to the M62.

Things to do

Bamford has a strong sporting life, with Bamford Fieldhouse Cricket Club, Rochdale Tennis Club and Bamford Bowling Club all based here. The Ashworth valley, to the west, has a popular walk along Cheesden Brook through Dobb Wood and Gelder Wood, past the remains of old mills, and longer routes lead on to the Cheesden valley and the moors.
