Living in Belmont
Belmont is a moorland village on the A675 between Bolton and Preston, set in the West Pennine Moors between Anglezarke Moor and Turton Moor, with Winter Hill rising to the south-west. It is part of the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen but has a Bolton (BL7) postcode, and Egerton, Edgworth and the edge of Bolton are a short drive away down the valley.
Most of its homes are 19th-century stone terraces and cottages. St Peter's Church was built in 1849 and consecrated on 1 April 1850. Belmont Reservoir, on the northern side of the village, was built by Bolton's waterworks to supply the town. The old bleach and dye works site is now used by businesses, and the village itself is surrounded by Green Belt, which keeps it small and gives it open moorland on almost every side.
Belmont has a close village community. The Black Dog on Church Street is the village pub, and Bolton Sailing Club sails on Belmont Reservoir.
Schools and getting around
Belmont Community Primary School on Ryecroft Lane is the village school, and secondary schools are a drive away in Bolton and Darwen. The 535 bus links Belmont with Astley Bridge and Bolton, with a few journeys on weekdays and Saturdays but none on Sundays, so most people here rely on a car. The A675 gives a direct road into Bolton to the south and towards the M65 to the north.
Things to do
Walking is the main draw. Paths lead from the village onto the open moors, up to Winter Hill and across towards Darwen, Rivington and Turton, and the reservoir makes a good shorter walk. Bolton and Darwen are close by for shopping, and Jumbles Country Park and the Wayoh Reservoir are a short drive away near Edgworth and Chapeltown.
