Tonge Moor is on the north-eastern side of Bolton, along Tonge Moor Road as it heads out of town towards Bradshaw and Harwood. Tonge Fold and the River Tonge are to the south, Breightmet to the east and Astley Bridge to the west. It has a Bolton (BL2) postcode and is only a mile or two from the town centre.

Its best-known building is Hall i' th' Wood, a Grade I listed Tudor manor house where Samuel Crompton lived with his family and invented the spinning mule in 1779. William Lever, later Lord Leverhulme, bought and restored it in 1899 and gave it to the town. Tonge Cemetery, Bolton's first municipal cemetery, opened at the end of 1856 and is listed Grade II.

Homes are a mix of Victorian and Edwardian terraces along and off Tonge Moor Road, with semi-detached houses and later estates further out. Tonge Moor Road has a good run of shops, takeaways and cafes for everyday needs.

Schools and getting around

Tonge Moor Primary Academy is in the heart of the area, and there are several other primary schools nearby. For secondary school, Canon Slade School, Turton School and Sharples School are all close by. The 507 bus runs along Tonge Moor Road between Bolton and Harwood, and Hall i' th' Wood station, on the line between Manchester Victoria and Blackburn, is close by.

Things to do

Hall i' th' Wood has been closed to visitors since 2021 for structural repairs. Nearby, Bradshaw Brook and Seven Acres Country Park lead on towards Bradshaw and Jumbles. Tonge Cricket Club is also in the area, and Bolton town centre is close by for shopping.
