Estate agents in Nangreaves
Nangreaves sits on the shoulder of Snape Hill below Harden Moor, about two miles south-east of Ramsbottom and just north of Walmersley. It is one of the most unusual places to live in our area. At its heart is Mount Pleasant, one of the few surviving early factory villages in Greater Manchester. The whole village has been a conservation area since 1974.
The village dates from 1819, when John Hall bought the land to expand his textile business. His mill at Mount Pleasant opened in 1820. It began as a collecting point for handloom weavers from as far away as Holcombe, Tottington, Affetside and Bolton, before becoming a working mill with cottages for its workers. The mill closed in 1965 and was later demolished. New homes were built in the old mill yard, designed to blend in with the stone terraces around them.
Today Nangreaves is made up mostly of stone terraced cottages, many of them Grade II listed, set around cobbled lanes and the old mill yard. The former Lord Raglan pub on Mount Pleasant is also listed, and plans to turn it into homes were approved in 2025. Homes come up for sale only now and then, and buyers who love period character often snap them up quickly.
Primary schools in nearby Walmersley include Springside Primary School, and Bury's secondary schools and town centre are a short drive away. Walmersley Old Road leads down to the A56, giving quick access to the M66, and Metrolink trams run from Bury Interchange into Manchester city centre.
Nangreaves is perfect for walkers. Paths lead straight out of the village onto Harden Moor, with views across to the Peel Monument on Holcombe Hill and, on clear days, as far as Rivington. The village keeps a strong community spirit, and Ramsbottom's independent shops, restaurants and East Lancashire Railway are just a few minutes away.
