Living in Brandlesholme
Brandlesholme is a residential area on the north-western side of Bury, along Brandlesholme Road as it heads out of town towards Greenmount and Holcombe Brook. Fields open out at its northern end, Tottington is just to the west, and the Irwell valley and Burrs Country Park lie to the east. It has a BL8 postcode and is a few minutes' drive from both Bury town centre and Ramsbottom.
The area's history goes back a long way. Brandlesholme Old Hall, off Brandlesholme Road, is a Grade II* listed house that began as a cruck-framed open hall in the 13th century, was extended in the 16th century and remodelled in 1849. The Greenhalgh family lived there for eleven generations, until the 1730s. It is still a private home.
Most of Brandlesholme was built in the 20th century, with estates either side of Brandlesholme Road. Semi-detached houses make up most of the homes sold here, alongside detached houses and terraces, which makes it a good choice for growing families.
Schools and getting around
Brandlesholme has three primary schools of its own: Woodbank Primary School on Brandlesholme Road, Old Hall Primary School on Springside View and Our Lady of Lourdes RC Primary School on Rudgwick Drive. Tottington High School and Woodhey High School in Ramsbottom are both a short drive away, as are Bury's other secondary schools. The 472 and 474 buses run along Brandlesholme Road between Bury Interchange, Holcombe Brook, Ramsbottom and Walmersley throughout the day, and Metrolink trams run from Bury Interchange into Manchester city centre.
Things to do
Burrs Country Park, on the River Irwell about a mile from Bury town centre, is the local favourite for walks, picnics and the playground. It has its own East Lancashire Railway station, sculptures on the Irwell Sculpture Trail, and an activity centre offering canoeing, climbing and archery. Back in Brandlesholme, Woodbank Cricket Club has played at The Kenyons since 1935.
