Living in Darwen
Darwen is a market town in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen, a few miles south of Blackburn and north of Bolton. It sits in a deep valley with Darwen Moor rising to the west, and has a Darwen (BB3) postcode. The M65 runs along its northern edge, and the A666 links it with Bolton to the south.
Darwen grew in the 19th century around its cotton mills and later its wallpaper makers. Its best-known landmark is the chimney of India Mill, built in 1867 and about 300 feet tall, which is listed Grade II. The Market Hall opened in 1882, and many of the town's streets are lined with stone and red-brick terraces from the same period. Larger Victorian houses, inter-war semis and newer estates add to the mix, so Darwen offers a wide range of homes.
The town centre has the market, independent shops, supermarkets, cafes and pubs, and Bold Venture Park is a short walk from it.
Schools and getting around
Darwen has a good number of primary schools, and secondary schools include Darwen Aldridge Community Academy on Sudell Road and Darwen Vale High School on Blackburn Road. Darwen station is on the line between Blackburn and Manchester Victoria, with Northern trains running through Bolton. The M65 gives quick access east to Burnley and west to Preston and the M6.
Things to do
Darwen Tower, also known as the Jubilee Tower, was completed in 1898 and stands about 85 feet tall on the top of Darwen Moor. The walk up from the town is a local favourite, with views across Lancashire on a clear day. Bold Venture Park, at the foot of the moor, is on the path up to the tower, and the moors lead on towards Belmont, Edgworth and the West Pennine Moors.
