Living in Chapeltown
Chapeltown is a small village on the southern slopes of the West Pennine Moors, just north of Bromley Cross and a mile or so south-west of Edgworth. It lies in the parish of North Turton, in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen, and has a Bolton (BL7) postcode.
The village is a conservation area, and its High Street is lined mainly with 18th and 19th-century stone cottages and terraces, packed tightly together in the way of a much older settlement. A small public garden holds the old village stocks and market cross. St Anne's Church, built in 1840 and 1841, and the Chetham Arms pub are both Grade II listed.
Just west of the village stands Turton Tower. Its stone tower dates from the 1400s, with Tudor, Stuart and Victorian additions, and it is listed Grade I. Lady Nina Knowles gave it to Turton Urban District Council in 1930, and it has been open to the public as a museum since 1952.
Homes, schools and getting around
Homes in Chapeltown are mostly period stone cottages and terraces, with a few larger houses and farmhouses on the edge of the village, so properties for sale are few and far between. Turton and Edgworth CE/Methodist Primary School is close by in Edgworth, and Turton School in Bromley Cross is the nearest secondary school. Bromley Cross station, with trains to Manchester Victoria and Blackburn, is a short drive away, and Bolton town centre is a short drive south.
Things to do
This is fine walking country. Paths lead out of the village to Turton Tower, up onto the moors and down to Wayoh Reservoir, Turton and Entwistle Reservoir and Jumbles Country Park. After a walk, the Chetham Arms is the village pub.
