Living in Crawshawbooth

Crawshawbooth is a village in the Borough of Rossendale, just north of Rawtenstall on Burnley Road (the A682). Limy Water runs down the valley through the village, with Loveclough further up the valley to the north and open moorland on both sides. It has a Rossendale (BB4) postcode, and Rawtenstall's shops and the A56 towards Bury and Manchester are only a few minutes away.

Crawshawbooth has some notable old buildings. The Friends Meeting House on Co-operation Street was built in 1716 and extended in 1736 and 1793, and it is listed Grade II*. Crawshaw Hall, built in 1831, is also listed Grade II*. The village grew in the 19th century with the valley's mills, and Burnley Road is lined with stone shopfronts, chapels and Victorian terraced housing. In 2026 Rossendale Council proposed a new conservation area for the village and consulted residents on the plans.

Most homes here are stone terraces, with some older cottages and later semi-detached and detached houses on the slopes either side of the valley. Day-to-day shops, pubs and takeaways are on Burnley Road, and Rawtenstall is close by for everything else.

Schools and getting around

Crawshawbooth Primary School is in the village, and secondary schools in Rawtenstall and the rest of Rossendale are a short drive or bus ride away. The X43 bus runs along Burnley Road between Burnley and Manchester, calling at Rawtenstall on the way, and the A682 and A56 give quick road links north to Burnley and south to Bury and the M66.

Things to do

Footpaths climb out of the village onto the moors on either side of the valley, with wide views over Rossendale. Rawtenstall is close by for shops, cafes, the East Lancashire Railway and Whitaker Park, and the moorland roads lead north towards Burnley.
