Living in Egerton

Egerton is a village about three miles north of Bolton town centre, on the A666 Blackburn Road where the town gives way to the West Pennine Moors. Bromley Cross and Dunscar are its neighbours to the south. It is part of the Borough of Bolton and has a BL7 postcode.

Egerton was a small farming community until the 1830s, when Henry and Edmund Ashworth expanded Egerton Mill and built houses, schools and a library for their workers. Much of the old village is now a conservation area, covering the stone terraces along Blackburn Road and its side streets, Egerton Park, the cricket ground and Christ Church.

Homes range from the original stone mill terraces and cottages to more modern family homes on the edges of the village, with open countryside only a few minutes' walk away.

Schools and getting around

Egerton has two primary schools: Egerton Community Primary School on Cox Green Road and Walmsley CE Primary School on Blackburn Road. Turton School in Bromley Cross and Canon Slade School in Bradshaw are the nearest secondary schools. The number 1 bus runs along Blackburn Road between Bolton, Darwen and Blackburn, and the 533 links Egerton with Bromley Cross, Bradshaw and Bolton. Bromley Cross station is a short drive away.

Things to do

To the west of the village, Gale Clough and Shooterslee Wood is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, protected for its old broad-leaved woodland. Egerton Park and the cricket ground are at the centre of village life, and paths lead from Egerton up onto the moors towards Turton and Belmont.
