Living in Bromley Cross

Bromley Cross is a residential area on the northern edge of Bolton, on the southern fringe of the West Pennine Moors. Egerton lies to the west, Bradshaw to the east and Chapeltown and Turton just to the north. It is part of the Borough of Bolton and has a BL7 postcode.

The village grew in the 19th century around the bleachworks and mills that used water from Eagley Brook. Homes today range from Victorian stone terraces to a large choice of 20th-century semis and detached family houses, many on quiet roads close to the station and the countryside.

In the north of Bromley Cross is the Last Drop Village. Its 17th-century farmhouses and farm buildings at Orrell Fold were turned into a restaurant and hotel from 1964, and the site has since grown to include a pub, shops and a spa. Closer to the station there is a village green and a small row of shops.

Schools and getting around

Eagley Infant School and Eagley Junior School serve younger children, and Turton School, the local secondary school, is in Bromley Cross itself. Bromley Cross station is on the line between Manchester Victoria and Blackburn, with trains roughly every half hour in each direction, which makes the village popular with commuters. The 533 bus links Bromley Cross with Bradshaw, Egerton and Bolton.

Things to do

Jumbles Country Park, with its reservoir walk, is right on the doorstep, and Turton Tower and the reservoirs around Edgworth are a short drive or a longer walk north. Bolton town centre is only a few minutes away by train.
