Living in Edgworth

Edgworth is a village on the southern edge of the West Pennine Moors, between Bolton and Darwen. It lies in the parish of North Turton, in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen, but has a Bolton (BL7) postcode. The Wayoh Reservoir runs along its western side, and Hawkshaw, Affetside and Ramsbottom are just over the hill to the east.

Edgworth grew from farmsteads and small groups of stone cottages, such as Isherwood Fold off Blackburn Road, and the Barlow family did a great deal for the village. Newer housing has since grown up around the old centre, so today stone cottages and farmhouses sit alongside larger modern family homes.

The Barlow is still the heart of the village. Built in the Arts and Crafts style and opened in 1909 as a memorial to James and Alice Barlow, it is now run by volunteers, with a coffee shop and bar, a hall, a library and a new play area. Edgworth Cricket and Recreation Club and the village bowling club play beside it. The village also has a post office, a butcher's, the well-known Holden's ice cream shop, and pubs including the Black Bull and the Rose and Crown.

Schools and getting around

Turton and Edgworth CE/Methodist Primary School is on Bolton Road in the village, and Turton School in Bromley Cross is the nearest secondary school. Most residents drive: Bolton, Darwen and Ramsbottom are all a short drive away. Bus services are limited to a few journeys on certain days, but Entwistle and Bromley Cross stations, on the line between Manchester Victoria and Blackburn, are close by.

Things to do

Paths lead from the village around Wayoh Reservoir and on to Turton and Entwistle Reservoir, and the Witton Weavers Way long-distance trail passes nearby. Jumbles Country Park and Turton Tower, a historic house and museum, are only a few minutes away.
