Living in Harwood
Harwood sits on the north-eastern edge of Bolton, on the side nearest Bury, with the West Pennine Moors rising behind it. Bradshaw Brook separates it from Tonge, and Bradshaw, Affetside and Breightmet are its neighbours. It is part of the Borough of Bolton and has a BL2 postcode, and Bury, Tottington and Ramsbottom are all a short drive away.
Harwood was recorded as Harewode as early as 1212. For centuries it was a farming township, with stone quarries and bleachworks along the brooks. The common land was enclosed in 1801, and Christ's Church on Stitch-mi-Lane was consecrated in 1840. Harwood was part of Turton Urban District until 1974, when it became part of Bolton. Much of today's Harwood was built in the 1960s and 1970s, as farms and lanes gave way to estates of family homes, and older stone cottages and farmhouses survive on the lanes towards the moors.
Day-to-day shopping centres on the precinct around the Morrisons supermarket, and there is a good choice of pubs, including the White Horse on Stitch-mi-Lane and the House Without a Name on Lea Gate. Longsight Park, off Longsight Lane, has a playground, a football pitch, walking paths and a nature trail, and the Kingfisher Trail links it to Bolton's arboretum.
Schools and getting around
Harwood Meadows Primary School, Hardy Mill Primary School and St Brendan's RC Primary School are all in Harwood, and St Maxentius CE Primary School is next door in Bradshaw. For older children, Canon Slade School on Bradshaw Brow and Turton School in Bromley Cross are both close by. The 507 bus runs a loop between Bolton Interchange and Harwood about every half hour through the day, and Hall i' th' Wood and Bromley Cross stations, on the line between Manchester Victoria and Blackburn, are nearby.
Things to do
Footpaths lead from the edge of Harwood up onto the fields and moorland towards Affetside, with wide views back over Bolton. Bradshaw Brook can be followed through Longsight Park, and Jumbles Country Park and its reservoir are a short drive north.
