Shuttleworth sits on the north-eastern edge of the Borough of Bury, about a mile south of Edenfield and across the M66 from the centre of Ramsbottom. Scout Moor rises immediately to the east, and the hamlet looks west over the Irwell valley to Holcombe Hill and the Peel Monument. It has always been part of the Ramsbottom community, and it shares its BL0 postcode.

The name comes from the Old English for a gated enclosure, and it was first recorded as Suttelsworth in 1227. For centuries Shuttleworth was part of the township of Walmersley-cum-Shuttleworth before joining Ramsbottom in the late 1800s. Along Whalley Road you'll find rows of stone terraces, including Chapel Houses, four cottages converted from the old Bank Lane Chapel after 1847. Away from the main road there are semis, larger detached homes and farmhouses, and some homes on the quieter lanes have sold for well over £500,000.

For families, Peel Brow School is close by on the Ramsbottom side. Woodhey High School and the other Ramsbottom schools are a short drive away, as is Edenfield Church of England Primary School.

Shuttleworth is one of the best-connected spots in the area. The A56 Whalley Road runs straight through it, and the M66 is close by for Bury, Manchester and the Rossendale Valley. Ramsbottom station on the heritage East Lancashire Railway is a short hop away, and Metrolink trams run from Bury Interchange into Manchester city centre.

On the food and drink front, the Eagle & Child on Whalley Road is known for its "Incredible Edible" beer garden, which grows fruit, vegetables and herbs for the kitchen. Up the hill in Twine Valley, the family-run Fisherman's Retreat is set beside old fishing lodges and is famous for its whisky bar. Nearby Turn Village is home to Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary, and the paths onto Scout Moor are right on your doorstep.
