Walmersley runs along Walmersley Road, the A56, on the northern edge of Bury, heading north towards Ramsbottom. The Irwell valley lies to the west and the higher ground around Nangreaves and Harden Moor rises to the north-east. It is part of Bury, with a BL9 postcode, but fields and footpaths are never far away.

Christ Church in Walmersley was rebuilt in 1882 and 1883. The church, its former school and schoolmaster's house, and the old Walmersley Brewery buildings have been a conservation area since 2003.

Homes are a mix of terraces, semis and detached houses, many of them along Walmersley Road and Walmersley Old Road, with farmhouses and converted barns out on the lanes. Local life centres on Christ Church, the Hark to Dandler on Walmersley Old Road and the Sundial on Walmersley Road. Walmersley Golf Club was founded in 1906 and is still run by its members.

Springside Primary School is in the middle of Walmersley. For older children, Woodhey High School in Ramsbottom and Bury's secondary schools, including the independent Bury Grammar Schools, are a short drive away. The 472 bus runs between Bury Interchange and Ramsbottom through Walmersley, every 20 minutes for most of the day, and Metrolink trams run from Bury Interchange into Manchester city centre. Junction 1 of the M66, at the top of Walmersley Road, gives a quick route south to Manchester.

Walkers can follow Walmersley Old Road up to Nangreaves and Harden Moor, or take the paths west to Burrs Country Park and Summerseat. Bury town centre and its market are a few minutes south, with Ramsbottom's restaurants and the East Lancashire Railway just as close to the north.
