Living in Norden

Norden is a village on the western outskirts of Rochdale, along Edenfield Road (the A680), which climbs out of town over the moors to Edenfield in Rossendale. Bamford is just to the south, and the open country of the Naden valley lies to the north and west. It is part of the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, with an OL12 postcode.

St Paul's Church, built in 1860 to 1861 and consecrated in 1861, is listed Grade II.

Housing is a mix of stone terraces along Edenfield Road and the older lanes, with semi-detached and detached family homes on the estates built around them. Many homes have open views towards the moors, and the village has its own shops, pubs and takeaways.

Schools and getting around

Norden Primary Academy on Shawfield Lane and St Vincent's RC Primary School on Edenfield Road are the local primary schools, and secondary schools in Rochdale and Bury are within easy reach. Buses run along Edenfield Road into Rochdale town centre, where there is a railway station and Metrolink trams to Manchester, and the A680 leads south to the M62.

Things to do

The Naden valley has a chain of reservoirs. Greenbooth Reservoir, the last of them, was completed in 1963, and the old village of Greenbooth was cleared to make way for it. Walks lead from Norden up the valley and onto the moors, and the GM Ringway long-distance path runs from Norden to Bury through the Cheesden valley. Norden Cricket Club, at Woodhouse Lane, has played in the Lancashire League since 2018.
