Living in Kearsley

Kearsley is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, south of Bolton and about seven miles north-west of Manchester. Farnworth is to the north, Clifton to the south and Whitefield across the Irwell valley to the east. It has a Bolton (BL4) postcode, and the A666 runs through the town.

Kearsley grew as an industrial town, with collieries, iron foundries, paper mills and chemical works along the River Irwell. In 1878 an explosion at Unity Brook Colliery killed 43 men and boys. St Stephen's Church on Manchester Road was built in 1870 to 1871 and consecrated in 1871. Kearsley Power Station was built in the late 1920s and closed in 1980.

Homes are a mix of Victorian terraces, inter-war and post-war semis and newer developments, which makes Kearsley a good option for first-time buyers and families. There is a small shopping precinct and shops along Manchester Road.

Schools and getting around

Kearsley Academy, formerly George Tomlinson School, is the local secondary school, and primary schools include St Stephen's CE Primary School. Kearsley station, on Stoneclough Road, has trains to Bolton and Manchester. The Kearsley Spur links the A666 to the M61, and the M60 is close by.

Things to do

The Irwell valley runs along the eastern side of Kearsley, with riverside paths and a stretch of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal. Clifton Country Park and Moses Gate Country Park are both close by, and Bolton and Manchester are easy to reach for shopping and days out.
