Living in Whitworth

Whitworth is a small town in the Borough of Rossendale, on the A671 between Rochdale and Bacup. It runs along the valley of the River Spodden, with moorland rising either side, and takes in Facit and Shawforth to the north. It has a Rochdale (OL12) postcode, and Rochdale town centre is a short drive south.

In the 18th and 19th centuries Whitworth was famous for the Whitworth Doctors, a family of bone-setters and healers who began with John Taylor from 1764 and drew patients from across the country. The old centre around Whitworth Square, with its stone cottages and church, became a conservation area in 1974.

Most homes are stone terraced houses and cottages, with some newer estates and family homes on the edges of the town. There are shops, pubs and takeaways for day-to-day needs, and Rochdale and Bacup are close by for more.

Schools and getting around

Primary schools include Our Lady and St Anselm's RC Primary School, St Bartholomew's CE Primary School, St John with St Michael CE Primary School and Tonacliffe Primary School. Whitworth Community High School on Hall Street is the town's secondary school. The 464 bus runs through the town between Rochdale, Bacup, Rawtenstall and Accrington, and Rochdale has a railway station and Metrolink trams into Manchester.

Things to do

Healey Dell Nature Reserve, on the southern edge of Whitworth, follows the River Spodden through a wooded gorge with waterfalls. Its Grade II listed railway viaduct, built for the old line from Rochdale to Bacup, is a striking sight from the paths below. Footpaths lead from the town onto the surrounding moors, and Rochdale and Bacup are close by for shopping and days out.
