Living in Haslingden

Haslingden is a town in the Borough of Rossendale, Lancashire, set high on the western side of the Rossendale Valley with moorland all around it. Helmshore is just to the south, Rawtenstall is a couple of miles east, and the A56 runs past the town to join the M66 at Edenfield for Ramsbottom, Bury and Manchester. It has a BB4 postcode.

Haslingden was named a market town in 1676 and grew into a busy industrial town, first on woollen cloth, then cotton weaving and stone quarrying. Some of the old mill buildings still stand around the town.

Homes are mainly stone terraces built for mill and quarry workers, climbing the hillsides around the town centre, alongside larger Victorian houses and newer estates on the edge of town.

Schools and getting around

Primary schools include Haslingden Primary School on Ryefield Avenue, Haslingden Broadway Primary School and Haslingden St James CE Primary School on Regent Street, and Haslingden High School and Sixth Form is on Broadway. The X41 bus runs from Haslingden through Helmshore, Edenfield and Ramsbottom to Manchester, roughly every hour through the day. By car, Ramsbottom is a short drive down the A56.

Things to do

The town's best-known landmark is the Halo, an 18-metre steel sculpture on Top o' Slate above the town. It is free to visit, about a 15-minute walk up Higher Lane, and it glows blue after dark, with views right across the valley. Haslingden Cricket Club plays in the Lancashire League at Bentgate, and moorland walks start from the edge of town.
