Living in Stacksteads

Stacksteads is a village in the Borough of Rossendale, strung along Newchurch Road and the River Irwell between Waterfoot and Bacup. The valley is narrow here, with steep hillsides and moorland rising on both sides. It has a Bacup (OL13) postcode, and Rawtenstall is a short drive to the west.

Mills were built along the Irwell in the 19th century. Stacksteads Mill, built in 1833, is listed and was later turned into a shoe factory, and the village's stone terraces still climb the hillsides above the main road. The Kimberley Club, founded in 1897 as a club for quarry workers, is still lit and heated by gas.

Most homes in Stacksteads are stone terraced houses, many with views across the valley, with some newer houses on the edges of the village. Bacup and Waterfoot are close by for shops and pubs.

Schools and getting around

Bacup Holy Trinity Stacksteads CE Primary School on Booth Road and St Joseph's RC Primary School on Huttock End Lane are both in the village, and The Valley Leadership Academy in Bacup is the nearest secondary school. The 464 bus runs frequently along Newchurch Road between Rochdale, Bacup, Rawtenstall and Accrington, and Rawtenstall gives access to the A56 and M66.

Things to do

Lee Quarry, a former stone quarry above the village, is now one of the best-known mountain bike venues in the north of England, with around 10km of red and black graded trails, pump tracks and trials areas. It is free to use and is open to walkers too. Paths lead on to Cragg Quarry and the moors, and Bacup and Waterfoot are close by for days out.
