Living in Smithills

Smithills is a mainly residential area about three miles north-west of Bolton town centre, on the lower south-facing slopes of the West Pennine Moors. Heaton is to the south, Sharples and Astley Bridge to the east, and open moorland rises behind it towards Winter Hill. It has a Bolton (BL1) postcode.

The area takes its name from Smithills Hall, the old manor house. Barrow Bridge, at the western end of Smithills, was built as a model village for mill workers around 1830 by Robert Gardner and Thomas Bazley, and its rows of stone cottages are now a conservation area.

Most homes in Smithills are 20th-century semi-detached and detached family houses, with older stone cottages at Barrow Bridge and on the lanes towards the moors.

Schools and getting around

St Peter's Smithills Dean CE Primary School and Smithills School, a secondary school, are both in the area, and other primary schools are close by. Buses link Smithills with Bolton town centre, where the Interchange has trains to Manchester, Preston and beyond, and the M61 is a short drive away.

Things to do

Smithills Hall is a Grade I listed manor house dating back to the 14th century, set in gardens on Smithills Dean Road. It is now a museum with free entry. Beyond it, the Smithills Estate, the Woodland Trust's largest site in England at about 1,700 acres, has walking routes across woodland, farmland and moorland. Moss Bank Park and Barrow Bridge are also close by.
