Living in Unsworth
Unsworth lies on the southern side of the Borough of Bury, between Bury town centre and Whitefield, with Heywood to the east. It has a Bury (BL9) postcode and has been part of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury since 1974. The M60 and M66 are close by, which makes Unsworth an easy base for commuting across Greater Manchester.
Unsworth's history centres on St George's Church. A church was first built here in 1729 and consecrated in 1730, and the present building dates from 1842 to 1843. Unsworth Pole, the crossroads at the heart of the area, is named after the greased pole that once stood there for the village fair. Most of today's housing was built in the 20th century, including the Sunny Bank estate, which was mainly built in the 1960s.
Homes here are mostly semi-detached and detached family houses, with some bungalows and older terraces. There are local shops and takeaways for everyday needs, and Bury and Whitefield are close by for larger shops.
Schools and getting around
Primary schools include Sunny Bank Primary School on Hathaway Road, Unsworth Primary School on Blackley Close and Hollins Grundy Primary School on The Hags. Unsworth Academy, which was known as Castlebrook High School until 2019, is the local secondary school. The 95 bus links Unsworth with Bury, Whitefield, Prestwich and Salford, and Metrolink stops at Bury and Whitefield are a short drive away.
Things to do
Hollins Vale Local Nature Reserve follows Hollins Brook through the area and is a good place for a walk. Unsworth Cricket Club plays on Pole Lane, and Heaton Park, Bury town centre and the East Lancashire Railway are all within easy reach.
