Helmshore is a village in the Rossendale Valley in Lancashire, just south of Haslingden, below Musbury Tor. It is in the Borough of Rossendale and has a BB4 postcode, so it is not part of Bury, but it is only a few miles up the valley from our office in Ramsbottom.

The village grew up after 1789, when the Turner family built Higher Mill, a woollen mill. In the 1820s a second mill followed, now known as Whitaker's Mill, along with rows of stone terraces for the mill workers. The railway arrived in the late 1840s and the station closed in 1966. The mills, the terraces and the railway viaduct are still at the centre of the village.

Homes range from stone mill terraces to larger Victorian and Edwardian houses with bay windows along Holcombe Road. Newer estates have been built around the old village, so there is a good choice of modern family homes too. The two old mills are now Helmshore Mills Textile Museum, with a working waterwheel and a cafe. It opens from Thursday to Sunday between spring and autumn.

For families, Helmshore Primary School and St Veronica's Roman Catholic Primary School are both in the village, and Haslingden High School and Sixth Form is close by. The X41 bus calls at Helmshore between Accrington and Manchester, reaching Ramsbottom Market Place in about 20 minutes. By car, the A56 runs past the village and joins the M66 at Edenfield for Bury and Manchester.

From the village, paths lead up Musbury Tor and into the hills behind it. The old railway line is now part of National Cycle Network Route 6, which crosses Helmshore Viaduct and runs north towards Accrington and south to Stubbins. After a walk, there's the Robin Hood pub on Holcombe Road.
