Living in Hoddlesden

Hoddlesden is a village in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen, just east of Darwen and separated from it by a high ridge along Blacksnape Road. It sits on a hillside with wide views to the east, and the moorland of Haslingden Grane and the West Pennine Moors lies beyond. It has a Darwen (BB3) postcode, and Darwen town centre is a few minutes' drive away.

The old part of Hoddlesden is a 19th-century industrial village, built to serve the small coal pits and clay pipe works in the area and later the cotton industry. Its core of stone terraced housing around Queen's Square became a conservation area in 1975 and includes several listed buildings, among them the terrace on Browning Street. A railway branch line reached the village in 1876.

Around the old centre are newer brick-built estates, mostly from the 1970s onwards, so buyers can choose between stone cottages and terraces and more modern family homes.

Schools and getting around

St Paul's CE Primary School on Bayne Street is the village school, and secondary schools in Darwen, such as Darwen Aldridge Community Academy and Darwen Vale High School, are a short drive away. Buses link the village with Darwen, where the railway station has trains to Blackburn, Bolton and Manchester, and the M65 is close by.

Things to do

Footpaths lead from the village onto the surrounding fields and moors, and Hoddlesden Reservoir, just to the north, makes a good short walk. Darwen Tower, Edgworth and the Wayoh and Jumbles reservoirs are all within easy reach.
