Living in Rawtenstall

Rawtenstall is the main town of the Borough of Rossendale in Lancashire, on the River Irwell about four miles up the valley from Ramsbottom. Haslingden lies to the west, Waterfoot and Bacup to the east, and Crawshawbooth and Loveclough to the north. The A56 links it to the M66 at Edenfield, and it has a BB4 postcode.

Like the rest of the valley, Rawtenstall grew with its mills in the 19th century, and stone terraces still climb the hillsides above the town centre. There are also larger Victorian houses and newer family homes on the edge of town. Whitaker Park was once Oak Hill, the 1840s home of mill owner George Hardman. Richard Whitaker bought it and gave it to the town, and the park opened in 1901.

Bank Street is home to independent shops and cafes, and Mr Fitzpatrick's, Britain's last surviving original temperance bar, still serves sarsaparilla and dandelion and burdock. The Whitaker, the museum and art gallery in Whitaker Park, reopened in 2021 after a refurbishment and is free to visit.

Schools and getting around

Secondary schools include Alder Grange School and All Saints' Roman Catholic High School, and Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School is in nearby Waterfoot. St Paul's CE Primary School at Constable Lee is one of several primary schools in and around the town. Rawtenstall's bus station opened in 2019, and the 483 runs from there to Bury through Edenfield and Walmersley. Rawtenstall is also the northern end of the East Lancashire Railway, with heritage trains to Irwell Vale, Ramsbottom and Bury.

Things to do

Whitaker Park is the town's main park, with the museum at its centre. Walks lead up onto the moors on both sides of the valley, and the heritage trains make for an easy day out down the valley to Ramsbottom.
