Living in Bacup

Bacup is a town at the eastern end of the Rossendale valley, close to the border with West Yorkshire. Moorland surrounds it on every side, and roads lead out to Rawtenstall, Rochdale, Todmorden and Burnley. It has a Bacup (OL13) postcode and is part of the Borough of Rossendale.

Bacup began as a woollen and flannel-making settlement, became a cotton town in the 19th century with more than 60 mills by 1881, and later turned to shoe and slipper making. English Heritage once described it as the best-preserved cotton town in England, and the town centre is a conservation area. Most homes here are stone terraced houses, many with views over the valley, alongside some larger Victorian villas and newer houses on the edges of the town.

Bacup is also known for the Britannia Coconut Dancers, who dance through the town every Easter Saturday. The town centre has independent shops, cafes, pubs and a market.

Schools and getting around

Primary schools include St Saviour's CE Primary School, Bacup Thorn Primary School, Britannia Community Primary School, Northern Primary School and Sharneyford Primary School. The Valley Leadership Academy, which was known as Fearns, is the town's secondary school, and other Rossendale schools are a short drive away. The 464 bus links Bacup with Rawtenstall, Accrington, Whitworth and Rochdale, and the A681 leads west through Waterfoot to Rawtenstall and the A56.

Things to do

Bacup Museum on Yorkshire Street tells the story of the town and its people. Footpaths lead straight from the streets onto the surrounding moors, and Waterfoot, Rawtenstall and Rochdale are close by for days out.
