Living in Heaton

Heaton is a mostly residential district about two miles north-west of Bolton town centre, on the lower south-facing slopes of the West Pennine Moors. Chorley New Road runs through it, with Deane to the south, Markland Hill and Lostock to the west and Smithills to the north. It has a Bolton (BL1) postcode.

As Bolton grew rich from cotton, large houses were built along Chorley New Road, and many of these Victorian villas still stand. Christ Church, at the Markland Hill junction, was consecrated in 1896.

Homes in Heaton range from large Victorian and Edwardian houses to inter-war semis and later detached family homes on quieter roads, which gives families a wide choice.

Schools and getting around

Markland Hill Primary School is one of the local primary schools, and Bolton School, the independent school on Chorley New Road, is close by. Buses run along Chorley New Road into Bolton town centre, Lostock station has trains to Bolton, Manchester and Preston, and the M61 is a short drive away.

Things to do

Heaton Cricket Club, founded in 1882 and now Heaton Sports Club, is a focal point for local sport and social life. The moors, Smithills Hall and the Smithills Estate are a short drive north, and Bolton town centre is close by for shopping.
